We welcome The Farmer and The Larder into our space. Chefs Matthew Raiford and Jovan Sage have become dear friends of ours, whose restaurant in Brunswick, GA is one of the preeminent destinations in the southeast. They have a inventive, curious, and mouth-watering approach to everything they prepare. If you haven’t been down to Brunswick to try them yet, we ask, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ Nobody is THAT BUSY to deprive themselves of so much goodness. And Batman has eaten there, y’all. That should be all you need to know.

CheFarmer Matthew Raiford, executive chef and owner at The Farmer and The Larder, featured in January 2016’s Garden & Gun as one of the South’s most exciting new restaurants, most recently served as the program coordinator and associate professor of Culinary Arts at the College of Coastal Georgia. He has a Bachelor’s of Professional Studies degree in Culinary Arts from The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York and a certificate in Ecological Horticulture from University of California Santa Cruz and The Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems. Raiford is also the farmer at Gilliard Farms in Brunswick, Ga. where he is the sixth generation to farm on the land that has been in his family since 1874.

Food Alchemist, Jovan Sage, is the resident pickler/fermentator/jam-maker/herbalist and owner at The Farmer and The Larder. As a little kid working in her grandfather’s shop at the City Market, Jovan got to explore the different food stalls, food trucks and farmers stands. She got to touch, see and taste food from all over the world and from local farms. It was there that she discovered the intoxicating allure of international spices – curries, fenugreek, cumin, paprika, peppers, ginger & turmeric. This foundation has shaped her palate and spice cabinet. Jovan has spent 15 years working with local, national and international non-profit organizations and spending the last 5 years focusing on sustainability, food and agriculture -- including working as a food retail consultant and Director for Slow Food USA in New York City.


We set out to create an event that could unite two of our favorite loves; chef culture and beer culture. Back in ATL Jason was a part of a film collective that did a ‘film slam’ called The Dailies Project that pitted filmmakers against a small challenge in an effort to get them collaborating, communicating, and thinking creatively. That program was the biggest influence on creating this event. These chefs have graciously taken us up our simple challenge to them; Create an innovative menu based on the beers offered by the assigned partner brand. They’ve really taken this to heart and jumped in with both feet. 

Well, to put it simply, the goal is to have fun. Boulevard’s rep will be here pouring samples. F&L will be putting on a lovely spread. And our Savannah Beer Community gets a chance to come together and ...commune. We get to see all our regulars one at a time and we know how great y’all are. This is a chance for all you Whalers to meet one another!

We hope that this event can grow to be a monthly fixture on our calendar featuring chefs from around the region who are up for a fun night!
