Background

Jovan Sage is a creator, food alchemist, herbalist, grower, wellness coach and restaurateur. Her days are steeped in transforming seeds into plants and plants into warming teas, hearty medicine and delicious dishes. Before moving to Georgia four years ago, she lived, roof-top gardened, and urban chicken-keeped in Brooklyn, New York.

CheFarmer Matthew Raiford wears many hats. Raiford holds a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree in culinary arts from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. He is a certified ecological horticulturist (University of California Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems). Raiford was named a James Beard semifinalist: Best Chef in the Southeast, 2018.

Together we work the land at Gilliard Farms - a Centennial African American & organic family farm; we educate and entertain through food at The Farmer & The Larder - a good food company focused on bringing delicious & fresh food to the table and exploring shared foodways and culture through taste and cooking classes. The Farmer and the Larder (opened 2015), was featured in Garden & Gun as one of the South’s most exciting new restaurants. We closed our brick & mortar at the end of 2018 to focus on creating our culinary and farming adventures on the land at Gilliard Farms.
